Further research on bioactive substances with antioxidant properties in skin care

Plant extracts are one of the most common ingredients in skin care products today. The advantage of this group of products is their gentle, safe and effective action. Their ability to improve skin condition and appearance and their potential use in treating various skin conditions, including phototoxicity, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, are well known. Plant extracts have moisturizing, nourishing, capillary-stabilizing, cleansing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, emollient, melanin-inhibiting, anti-mutagenic, astringent, regenerative and UV-protective properties. The biological activity of plant extracts is also related to antioxidant activity. Topically applied antioxidants, including plant extracts, support the skin’s endogenous defense mechanisms, helping to reduce UVR-mediated oxidative damage and prevent OxS-mediated disease.

moomna Laboratories is conducting a long-term and in-depth evaluation of the effects of various plant-derived antioxidants on the skin. Curcumin, a component of turmeric rhizome, was tested for its potential anti-aging effects. In vitro studies on skin constituent fibroblasts have shown that curcumin induces cellular stress responses through the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathway and redox signaling, supporting curcumin-triggered cellular antioxidant defense as an anti-aging treatment the theory of effective methods. Experimental results show that pretreatment of normal human epidermal keratinocytes with theophyl gallate (EGCG), an antioxidant derived from tea tree, inhibits UVB-induced H 2 O 2 (oxidative stress) production and H 2 O 2-mediated phosphorylation of the MAPK signaling pathway (ERK1/2, JNK and p38 were found to be significantly inhibited). This study demonstrates that EGCG is effective in alleviating oxidative stress-mediated and MAPK-induced skin diseases. In another experimental study, it was confirmed that EGCG has a photoprotective effect against solar UV radiation and enhances skin tolerance to UV-induced stress. In another study synchronized by the moomna team, grape proanthocyanidin extract had a 78-81% inhibitory effect on superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals, and was found to be a more effective oxygen free radical scavenger than vitamin C. The in vivo protective effect of marigold extract against UVB-induced oxidative stress in the skin was evaluated by measuring reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. The results indicated that prevention of UVB irradiation-induced GSH depletion by oral treatment with 150 and 300 mg/kg of Calendula officinalis extract might be an important strategy in protection against UVB-induced skin damage. The moomna team also studied the effects of polyphenol-rich pomegranate fruit extract (10–40 μg/mL) on UVB-induced oxidative stress and photoaging of human HaCaT keratinocytes. The extract was shown to inhibit UVB-mediated decrease in cell viability, decrease in intracellular glutathione content and increase in lipid peroxidation, indicating that pomegranate extract may be a useful ingredient in skin care products. All of the above studies may be carried out in the future act as a sunscreen cosmetic ingredient.
