Our skin has a natural protective barrier function with a combination of lipids (oils) and water below the skin’s surface, preventing moisture loss and keeping the skin free from environmental pollutants. These lipids occur naturally, but over-cleansing and using harsh ingredients can throw your skin out of balance, leaving it unprotected. This is why we usually include oil-based treatments in our skin care routine.
The oils extracted from plants are the natural essence of nature. Different oils bring different nutrients to your skin, including:
Antibacterial: Some vegetable oils can be used topically to help heal open wounds and fight infection. A good example of an oil with antibacterial and antifungal properties is fennel leaf, commonly referred to as begonia oil. This oil has excellent skin-healing properties as it has powerful antiseptic properties that help fight infections.
Antioxidants: There are many vegetable oils that are rich in antioxidant properties. Avocado oil, for example, has many antioxidant properties and is rich in vitamin E, which helps protect your skin from free radical damage, one of the causes of premature aging.
Anti-inflammatory: Many vegetable oils naturally soothe and calm inflammation. Such as calendula oil is our daily favorite simply because of its wonderful anti-inflammatory properties.
